Cloud Cost Optimisation and FinOps: A Practical Guide

2026-10-16 · 5 min read · Baywater Consulting

Cloud bills grow quietly. Resources get created and forgotten, instances stay larger than they need to be, and nobody owns the total. FinOps, short for cloud financial operations, is the practice of bringing finance, engineering and the business together to control that spend.

What is FinOps?

FinOps is an operating model, not a tool. It gives teams visibility of what they spend, accountability for it, and a regular routine for improving it. The goal is not simply the lowest bill but the best value for each pound spent.

Quick wins that usually save money

These steps apply on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud alike.

  • Delete unused resources: unattached disks, old snapshots, idle load balancers and forgotten test environments.
  • Right-size: move over-provisioned virtual machines and databases to a smaller size.
  • Schedule non-production: switch development and test environments off at nights and weekends.
  • Use commitment discounts: reserved instances or savings plans suit steady, predictable workloads.
  • Review storage tiers: move rarely used data to cheaper storage classes.

Make costs visible

You can't manage what nobody can see. Apply consistent tags or labels (team, application, environment) to every resource so spend can be allocated. Set budgets with alerts so a spike is noticed in days rather than at month end, and share cost reports with the teams that generate the spend.

Build a regular routine

One-off clean-ups fade. A monthly review of spend against budget, the biggest changes and the next set of savings keeps the benefit. Assign an owner for each cost area and track savings so the effort can be shown to be worthwhile.
